State and local governments, by being closest to the people, bring out the best of both self-and representative government. When local government calls the shots, the people making decisions know how lives are affected on the ground, and leave maximum room for people to improvise and innovate without having to ask permission. There will be mistakes, there will be flaws. But I believe that in the end mistakes are minimized and less arbitrary when the person facing the actual problem firsthand is the person making the decision.

Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution

I agree that government best serves those who are closest to it. And, in that, I also believe the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution should be repealed. We live and work with our representatives in our state houses. By allowing the electorate to vote for our Senators, we are relinquishing power originally given to the state legislatures or like entities throughout our states. If a Senator votes for a bill that inevitably harms the state they represent in order to further his/her own political career, we have no action in which to counter the vote. If the Seventeenth amendment were disolved, and the power is given back to the Senators in the states, the balance of power between the states and the federa government would be improved in my opinion. You may ask, "How?" Well, as stated above, we live and work with our state representatives and we can go and talk to them, call them up and let them know our opinions and how we will vote the next time they come up for re-election. The power is placed back into the hands of the people. I am heartened to learn Governor Perry is thinking along the same lines. We elected the right man for the job in these times of political turmoil.
